Thames Moon Olympics

In light of the Olympics I’ve dug deep into my hard drive to find this project. The Thames Moon is an object that sits in the Thames. As the Thames’ tide falls gravity works within the object to filter water. Compared to the overall filth of the Thames such a processes will hardly make a difference to the cleanliness of the river however the object’s purpose is more than a filtration system. It aims to bring attention to the Thames and the space that is created everyday between the tides, it encourages the citizens to be more thoughtful about the river and celebrates the fact that the river is slowly improving and now supports aquatic life. It reminds us that the city of London was built around the Thames, without it, it is unlikely London would exist. Thames Moon generates electricity using both the tide and solar energy for its lighting. Careful thought has been put into its position and shape so as to minimise the effect it has on water flow and to increase its visibility to passersby.

More cards! it's about time I made a name card. And here it is.

It is obvious that font, lettering and information communication has been playing on my mind recently. Of course thinking up name cards is way to exciting so I'm sure I will think up a new one within the year. The card comprises of a paper clip and two pieces of paper. One side has my blog address and the other has my name and number hidden within the letters. The receiver must play with the card that has holes to reveal the details.

To go with the card is a new background design. I hope all the letters aren't giving you too much a migraine!

Business cards

Branding can often be a complicated affair. Not only do you need to take into account the style and product of the client but also the client’s target audience. The ultimate goal of a simple design that is easily understood yet gives the viewer a depth of information at a glance, is notoriously difficult. Finally the icing on the cake, is the brand memorable?

 

For the particular card I wanted to create a sense of history and mystery. This is because the product, although modern, draws from hundreds of years of tradition.

Colouring and font are purposely kept simple and easy to read, the hint of an image should intrigue the viewer into having a closer look. The viewer may flip the card to see if the image is actually on the back. The image however is not on the back but within, only holding the card up to light will reveal the image.

I have blanket out address and contact details on the photos. In the future I hope to create a simple website in a similar style.

Happy 2012

Happy year of the Dragon! Finally after sketch upon sketch the dragon nengajo is complete. I hope that I was able to send you one, if not I still wish you the best of luck in 2012 and if you send me your address you will definitely receive a 2013 nengajo in the post. I’ve been using the second image as my laptop background, so go ahead and use it too; it might bring you some good fortune.

I’ll leave you to contemplate these Chinese proverbs…

The dragon teaches you that if you want to climb high you have to do it against the wind.

Miller Harris at Ab Rogers

Miller Harris is a world famous brand of perfume with store all over the word. The website can be found at this address www.millerharris.com. The brand was designed by the wonderful Asuka Kawabata (www.tokyobranch.jp) This model represents a stand that will sell perfume within the cosmetic section of department stores. It was designed at Ab Rogers (www.abrogers.com) and I was asked to make this model out of card and acrylic.

New background

I probably should have also posted an image of the new background! Here it is.

From old to new

Finally a new background, I hope the new one is just as appealing and easier on the eyes. The old background was designed with 2011 fashion trend in mind, bold prints and retro patterns. However I aimed to make the background more asymmetrical and opted to not use the neon colours that are also being pushed on the catwalk. The new background came about when I was looking in an old sketch book. I found a small piece of tracing paper with a print design I was working on at university. At that time I was researching textiles of the 1950s which drew inspiration from the current atom age. Many textiles had prints and weaves that symbolised cells, atoms... things looked at under a telescope.  The colouring however is inspired from Paul Klee's

My first ever built project. Thank you Susan for sending me these photos, I'm so happy to see that it has grown so well. The garden must be around 5 years old, the Choisya and Polygonatum are in bloom! The brief for this project was an all year round garden full of wonderful scents; A welcome home from a hard day at work. The form is asymmetrical deriving its contours from that of the house. The plans are all hand drawn and as I don't have a scanner big enough, I photographed and touched them up in Illustrator so as to post them on this blog.

Tsukuru Market Flier No*4

 

Last year I worked at M28E/Tsukuru, were I was able to get a diverse range of experiences. The company, which originally was a garden design company is ever expanding into new fields. During my time there we designed many events, festivals, exhibitions, and even a stage set. This particular flier I designed for a Market held twice a year in the Tsukuru building. The event held more then 40 stalls, including music, food, therapies and hand crafted goods. The fliers were handed out at local shops and stations. Although my time at M28E was short, the experience I had was truly enlightening. Not to mention the kind and friendly people I am so lucky to have met. Model Making at Ab Rogers (Emperor Moth)

During University I had the pleasure of working at Ab Rogers (http://www.abrogers.com/). These photos are of a design for a Moscow boutique Emperor Moth, the interior is a crazy shatter of reflecting mirrors that makes you feel as if you are floating within a crystal. The pink outlines are representative of both Emperor Moth's and Ab's flamboyant style.

On this project I helped make the construction model. It was the most exciting and difficult model I have ever experienced. The model was mainly for the constructors, and worked as a blue print or reference so that constructing the abstract space went smoothly.

The model was first drawn in a free 3D program, then it was printed to scale, splayed out on a piece of paper with a code on each component, meanwhile each component was laser cut, sprayed and joined using the printout as a reference. The model sits in a supporting frame which easily shows the numbers of each panel on the back and assisted the constructors.
